Theft, murder, and a hypnotist who can make men do terrible things! The old master detective against the master criminal!

“Who did it — who would kill a man like Cyrus Butterfield?” muttered the broker, as he gazed abstractedly at the cashier.

“God knows I wish I could tell you, Mr. Severs,” fervently exclaimed the cashier, and then he stepped to the door of the outer office, which connected directly with the main banking-room beyond.

“I will get the ledger and show you how the account stands, but I cannot give you much information concerning your securities until I have had an opportunity to make some investigation,” he remarked, and for a moment the seeming broker was alone.

He half rose from his chair, and through the little window, he saw the cashier pass directly to the outer or main banking-room.

A moment later he heard a startled exclamation from beyond the partition which separated the office from the bank, and then the door swung open and Cashier Paul staggered through the space into his presence, his face whiter than death, and his knees knocking together as he struggled to save himself from the fall.

“My God!” he cried in a hollow tone. “We have been robbed!”
