Old Cap Collier Library
Victorian-era detective fiction from the 1880s — raw, thrilling, and nearly lost to time.
Before Sherlock Holmes became a household name, American readers were devouring the exploits of Old Cap Collier — a grizzled, sharp-eyed detective who worked the streets of New York City in the 1880s.
Published as cheaply printed pamphlets and passed hand to hand, these stories were wildly popular in their day. But paper was cheap, and almost none survived. Libraries didn't keep them. Collectors let them crumble.
We've been tracking down surviving copies in university archives, private collections, and estate sales. Each title gets a full restoration — OCR reconstruction, line-by-line proofreading, and professional typesetting that honors the original design.
The Old Cap Collier Library will feature the best of these Victorian-era detective tales, restored for modern readers who appreciate stories with real grit and authentic period detail.
